"Jill" and I began dating and instead of me listening to my par-ents advice that I needed to be with one woman I honestly be-lieved there was nothing wrong with me having a girlfriend that I loved and treated well, but at the same time having other women

that I used on occasion to have sex with. I didn’t know that you weren’t supposed to have other women when you had someone you were calling your "girlfriend." In my world as long as I could keep the whorish man that I was separated from the man that I was trying to be with this young lady then the world was good. I didn’t apply any pressure to her to have sex: one, because I ac-tually respected her and two, because I had other women to take care of me if I needed. I learned to be romantic and nurturing. The loving young man that my mother was trying to raise was slowly coming forth.

Jill and I had the typical boyfriend-girlfriend scenario. She came to my basketball games to cheer me on. She wore my school jacket. When I think back God had blessed me with an equal because all of my weaknesses were her strengths. My call-ousness and ego were tempered by her humility and passion for life. She was a great singer and I loved to listen to her. Where her self-esteem was shaken, I had extra and I refused to allow anyone to speak negatively of her.

She took up more of my mind and time than I was used to any one woman having, but like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde once I had hung up the phone, took her home, and she was no longer around I became that other side of me. I evolved into a creature with two faces and those faces switched back and forth when needed. This creature operated unabated for some time, but you can’t live in New York City with a population of five to seven million people and not run into someone who knows you, knows of you, and or knows the current person you’re dating. My ego allowed me to think I was greater than that.

As our relationship grew and we started to come upon the hol-idays Jill and I had agreed we were going to keep gift giving very simple. This was one of the greatest experiences, outside of sex, that I had ever had in a relationship. It was honestly the first. Jill gave me a stuffed toy Garfield cat because she knew I was a fan of the cartoon. When it was my turn to give a gift I decided to do it at school. Anyone who knows me knows that even when I do something simple it has to be grandiose. We were sitting in the main lounge where all the students hung out waiting for their next class. On one side was a wall of windows from floor to ceil-ing. I could see when a friend of mine came out of her car with the gift I was giving Jill. It was a huge stuffed toy horse. I stepped out-side and when I came back I was carrying this gigantic horse on my back. I crave attention so it was nothing for me to stand on a table in the middle of the lounge and explain to everyone that the stuffed animal was for my lovely girlfriend. I almost fell off the ta-ble, but everyone laughed.

A few hours later I overheard her tell a girlfriend she wanted a Fendi pocketbook. I had no idea who or what Fendi was, but I could hear the excitement in her voice about having one. I was big on romantic statements and I was going to try to do something special. Armed with grant money that was supposed to be for my tuition, I decided to get a Fendi bag for her for Christmas. I was told the place to get it was Macy’s department store. The Christ-mas Holiday in New York is not just happy greetings and good cheer. You have overcrowded streets, cranky pedestrians, and tempers pushed to the limits at times. It was bedlam, but I was determined to get a gift to impress my girlfriend.

When I walked into Macy’s I was immediately in a sea of bod-ies scurrying back and forth. It was like every movie you have seen of New York City, but multiply it by ten. Between the Christmas music, the noise, and the voices it was easy to become over-whelmed, but I was powered by love. I was so focused that it was almost silent as I looked for a salesperson to help me find Fendi. Instead I found a neat and professionally dressed security guard standing to the side.

"Good evening, where can I find a Fendi bag?" I asked him. He points to a whole section that is screaming Fendi and says, "Right over there, stupid." Wow, only in New York can a young man ask about a very expensive designer and be called stupid at the same time.

As I walked over to the Fendi section, a very friendly looking saleswoman was smiling at me. She was about in her late to mid thirties and I could tell that she’d been working at the store for a long time because as soon as I asked her about purchasing a bag for my girlfriend her eyes immediately lit up and she went straight into her sales pitch. Pulling out each bag placing them on the counter explaining what they’re used for and their different fea-tures. I started to become overwhelmed. Now, I can hear the noise of all the people around me. The holiday music is starting to sound deafening. I’m feeling pressure because I don’t know which bag to choose. So, like the ghetto kid that I was I based my deci-sion on how much money I had in my pocket

"Which of these bags can I get for two-hundred dollars?"

You would have thought that I had just spit the "B" word at her. The saleswomen turned pale. Her smile disappeared and she looked as if she had been disrespected. She snatched all of the bags off the counter and starts to put what looked like miniature versions of the same bags onto the counter. They didn’t come with any speech. They didn’t come with any elaborate sales tech-nique like she had just done for those other bags. It was, "Here you go."

There were basically three bags. One looked like a mutant tootsie roll with a little tiny change purse. Another one looked like a gigantic cigarette case, and the last one looked like a long wal-let. She’s gives me the prices of the tootsie roll and the bag with no handle which I found out later was a clutch. Now, of course, when you’re young and in love, none of that matters. It’s Fendi and it was real Fendi. Even though I didn’t know I could have gone out on the street and saw one of the street vendors who could have given me the knock-off version for maybe twenty-five dol-lars, but when you’re in love, you do stupid things. This was my stupid thing. So, I went with the clutch. It was two-hundred forty dollars, but because the saleswoman just wanted to make the sale she gave it to me for $200. I headed back to Jamaica, Queens with a smile on my face.

Jill was due to come to my house Christmas morning because we agreed I would go with her to her grandmother’s house Christmas night. She had Christmas breakfast with my mother, sisters and me. After we all settled down and got comfortable in the living room I gave Jill her gift. We had already exchanged gifts so she wasn’t expecting anything else.

"What is this?"

This is where, when I look back at myself, I realize that the man I am now had roots in me then. The seeds were there, but the weeds of the sexual beast and creature that I was were so in control of my life that those seeds had to take refuge in the mud which was my soul only to come out when they knew they were safe. Watching her tear open the wrapping paper was similar to watching a holiday movie and the characters are right at that moment when they are going to get their wish from Santa Claus.

She opened the box with the clutch inside. She picked the clutch up never taking her eyes off of it. I could see tears began to form in her eyes as her fingers slowly caressed it. There was com-plete silence as the tears now started to roll down her cheeks. When she looked up at me with those eyes, it didn’t matter what I went through to get the bag. I had accomplished what I wanted and that was to send from my heart to her heart how I felt. Oh, I can still feel the hug and I can still feel the kiss and I can still feel that excitement of that moment.

On February 14Th, 2008, Mary B. Morrison one the Queens of Erotica, heard me on a blog talk radio show, Ella Curry's Black Authors Network Literary Talk Show. That Valentines night I was simply talking about loving my wife and the negatives we have overcome to be happily married. Mind you, I hadn't published anything at that point and my book was not due out until late June of the same year.
After the show, Ms. Morrison contacted me, through Ella, and asked would I write my story and place it in her new back. The book was called "Who's Love You" I was so excited I wrote the 3000 words as requested.
This was my word from God I was on my way to being an pretty good author. You see my story with my wife had nothing to do with erotica yet Ms. Morrison still wanted my words in her book. When a New York Times, Essence best seller author, who makes her living off of her writing skills, hears your story and reacts, you have something going on.
So on pages 246-249 of the hard cover version of Ms. Morrison's "Who's Loving You" you find my words nestled in amongst the erotica.

As one of the chosen 12 in the new upcoming Bravin Publishing poetic anthology called Word Play. I wanted to write something to get out some energy which wasn't helping me today. This is what I wrote. You decide what you think. Enjoy.

Life Shouldn't Be This Hard.

It’s not supposed to be this rough?

Standing in a crowd of people feeling like Ms. Celee, wondering is God trying to tell me something.

Am I really Suge Avery and my Father don’t want nothing to do with me?

Why has society transformed into “Mister” doing its business on me while asking me to lay there and take it.

Been told I was a king but taught to “fake it until I make it”. So if you don’t make it has your life been real?

This is crazy, head full of dreams, heart full of hope and pockets lined with the results of what people know about me, nothing.

A dollar and dream, what happens when you don’t have either at the same time? You’re now assed out of even the legal hustle unable to come up.

This explains why brothers’ head back to the streets.

Yet that blood, that regal blood of mine, the "you have been saved by God and are here for a purpose blood line” holds me in place each time.

It keeps me striving, wanting more, of something I've never had.

It’s sick when you think about, almost absurd but in the end this is what dreaming is all about.

They say if the mind can perceive it then a man can achieve it.

This sucks since I have perceived along with millions of others just enough to be happy, not elated or ecstatic, just happy.

Yet the world won't give in.

See, when men back then created these thought provoking lines they weren't poets they wanted to say something slick and allow it shape the thoughts of the weaker minds.

When you tell a poet to perceive, dare to dream, or speak it in to existence, he does so, then when it doesn't line up here comes the venom.

There is something many don’t understand pain is resource to a wordsmith.

He will cleverly craft concoctions for the conciseness in a literal context simply to keep others at bay, while he transforms the world around him.

So today I may be down with you squatting over me, ready to defecate, but when the tables turn and you look to marvel at the negative state you have attempted to create, I was never there to begin with.

It was my words which lead you to believe I would accept the crappy position you were trying to place me in.

You see a poet’s power is his connection to the words. All life is made of words, Adam was given the power to name all which was around him so he was the first true Wordsmith.

Since that time many have lost the skills and in others it lays dormant.

Ahhhh you forgot the Evil one, the rejected one, the snake to many, the epitome of desire, the greatest twister of words, he is the one that picked up Adam's mic and from that day has spit lyrics like the Pied Piper and our souls have danced away like the children of legend.

The Most High breathed life into each poet asking them to take on the task of being Adam like.

So ordered to spit life into things which before were nameless.

Now you understand why I asked is it supposed to be this rough when so much Godly talent has been placed in Man’s hands.

Allow me to dream for when I am done I am going to speak into this world something new, and given enough time I’ll place a name to something which will change the world forever.

If you've listened to the multiple interviews we've done or read my memoir "From Gigolo to Jesus" you already know that Tiff and I strongly believe that anyone can have a great relationship once built on a solid foundation. To some folks we are an anomaly, but through our travels around the country and even amongst our own peers we have found couples who represent the love we talk about so much in our own relationship. We want to put a spotlight on those folks making love work.

For a number of years Tiffany and I have been told, "You two should have your own show." Whether it be television or radio people saw something that we hadn't quite seen for ourselves that they thought we needed to share with the world. So, it was something we considered, but didn't think we were quite ready to do, until now. Some ideas were tossed around and finaly we accepted.

Starting Friday September 16th from 7pm-10pm my lovely wife Tiffany and I will be hosting our very own radio show. "Black Love Radio" will be centered on relationship building and support, with tips on having a productive relationship. Being together for over 11 years, owners of our own business "Bravin Publishing" as well as holding professional careers we will bring our candidly unqiue points of view and experiences. We plan to feature inspirational couples as well as industry professionals, coupled with great music and thought provoking discussions.

Keep in mind the title "Black Love Radio" does not mean we are excluding any other groups of couples in love, but instead emphasizes the bond that we have as an African-American couple. Also, we realize the need to address issues within our culture in order to improve relationships. We would like to spotlight couples from all ethnicities that have braved the storms in order to be what they are today. So no matter who you are or where you're from, whether you're in a great, good, or not-so-good relationship we want you to tune in to "Black Love Radio."

We want to give a special acknowledgement to Jay Everyday for inviting us to take part in the Everyday Radio line up. His decision to choose us as hosts is a special salute to what Tiff and I are as a couple.

God Showed me I could make a difference with my writing. How one poem changed two lives..

Three years ago, I attended the Black Writer's Conference.
My fist book had not yet reached my house and all I had was the proof copy.
However I took the trip to Tampa, FL, to learn, network and to see if I had
what it took to be in this literary game. Now many told me "don't write
poetry it doesn't sell." Well I have always been hard headed. To fast
forward, I began networking and making connections. Well while standing in the lobby wide eyed and happy to just be a part of things; a statuesque young lady came over to speak to me. She stood a little taller than me. Not sure if she had on heels. Didn't matter. I am six foot and half inch tall. Well one of the first thing I noticed is her beauty.
She came over holding a bookmark and said a friend of mine at the table where she bought said come over and talk to me. I was a little confused but I am open to speak to anyone. It’s just part of my character. The young ladies name was Patricia Haley. I remember her name since she was one of the presenters of one of the daily seminars. After speaking to her, she mentioned the bookmark hit a nerve with her. Now forgive me if I get it wrong since it’s been a few years. The book mark said, "To be the butterfly you can be, you have to let go of the caterpillar you were" If I am wrong I am sorry to whoever wrote the mark. Patricia said often she feels like the caterpillar. I wanted to cheer her up. This lovely intelligent woman is sounding so negative about herself when others would kill to be where she is at and with the looks she has. A person cam and asked to take our pictures, she refused and said "I don't take pictures. I take bad pictures" I said impossible. You took bad pictures there is no way you’re going to know how the picture is going to come out. Well e took the picture and it was great. Now let me tell you this. I am a happily married man. However, if I had been single and if Ms. Haley was single, I would have wanted to get to know her better the way a gentleman should.

Later that evening around one am or so, I saw everyone coming and going in and our off the hotel. I was not in a partying mood so I sat in the lobby with my note book. My spirit was buzzing from the conversation I had earlier with Patricia. Why did this wonderful talented woman feel this way about herself? What is missing or not getting through. She is here to help educate others and she has doubt in some area within herself. Well like most poets, when the feeling won't leave its time to create. So create is what I did. I sat and decided what words would fit this feeling I have inside of me. A few hours later I had a poem I felt Patricia would like. I had planned on reading at the poetry contest they were going to have the next day. Upon getting up in the morning I thought it would be wrong to read a piece for someone about them without their permission. Even though these were my words, they were based on another’s pain and our conversation. You have to be fair. That afternoon I told Patricia I have something for you to listen too. This is where two lives changed. The Lord is truly great since I tribute all my gifts to Him. She asked "Am I am going to need a tissue" There was another author I had met the day before standing in tow who wanted to hear what I was going to lay down. Well, let me say this, this was the first time I simply wrote a poem for a stranger to be read to them. As I began to read the emotion inside me pulled on the emotions inside Patricia. The tears which came down her cheek were singing to my soul. I never expected such a display. To this day I get emotional thinking about it because it was validation I can be a true professional writer. As well as I can use my writing to help another person. Patricia whipped her tears and gave me a hug. I signed my poem for her and gave it to her as a gift. I then looked over at the fellow author and she was in tears from the emotional moment shared by my muse and me.

Well I came home to finish out the summer and lost contact with Patricia.
Once I started extending my Facebook journey the time for the 2009 conference came around and I was unable to make it. In searching for information I came across Patricia’s profile and sent her a add request. She said she was excited to hear from and then she explained how my poem changed her life. I looked at her photo album and here she had pictures all over with one of the biggest smiles you could see on a person. My heart was filled with joy to see this transformation (BTW this is the name of the poem). She told me to read her note from last year written a few weeks later after the conference. At the bottom of this note are Patricia Haley’s words towards my poem. It is an honor. To this day I don't take what I write lately or am I scared to offer my words. I have seen the power of honesty with the feelings inside of me. I would say to any poet, "Please don't short change yourself by writing and hiding your talent. Share your words with as many as you can because you never know who you can and will touch with your words. You see "A Man in Transition" was even for sale and her I was shown I had a future as writer. Father in heaven I thank you for allowing me to meet my sister Patricia Haley who I pray never goes back to being that caterpillar but remains the sensual, intellectual beautiful
butterfly. Meeting you changed my life. GOD BLESS

Transformation.

The caterpillar moves into position.
The Time reaches near, his end is the beginning.

Empress asked why my pen doesn't write more. Well in looking at all of your work and figuring how we can lay this book right I have begun to write here and there.. Here is something I wrote today.. God Bless guys,, Remember "Patience is the weapon they don't see but feel" K. L.

THE DEATH OF THE RADICAL...

Where has the individuals gone who saw the world differently? How the hell did we lose the fight when so many use to line up in a belief of a common right? True radicals would never be swayed by the lure of World Star Hip Hop or MEDIA TAKE OUT. Our children's lives use to mean more three minutes of fame. We should be ashamed at the books we read. There was a time fingers in the dirt is how we passed the knowledge of written words. Back when we cherished reading more than life. Now the top book sellers speak on and benefit on speaking about lifestyle most don't want or many don't care to live over, yet we keep buying. Damn!

Who murdered the internal connection to the Huey Newton’s, Bobby Seal’s, Malcolm X's, Rose Parks’, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s, and so many well know but easily forgotten sprits.
It was Harriet Tubman who uttered "I Can't Die But Once" Doesn't your soul scream in digust or do you drown it out with music which doesn't represent anything positive. Yet we keep piling into concert after concert given “those who don’t look like us” reason to laugh at how we enslave ourselves with strong sexual lyrics laced with violent overtones at the very Queens we need to produce more Kings.

When did Radicals die or did they run away? The true radical understood we were at war. If we couldn't live like men or women then death would be better. Now our children dress like pimps and whores gyrating on each other like animals in heat. The role of the radical was to grant ownership back to lost Kings and Queens yet we fight to continue to be Surfs.
A true radical studied and understood the power of a college education. Here we stand as they march us off to war or jail smiling as we pass around the flyers for the next big BBQ, Ski Trip, or Crab Fest, with "BYOB” or “TOP SHELF” in extra large letters set in place to entice our attendance.

When was the funereal, was there a service for the late great super hero call the Radical? There was a time we stood for something. Even intertwined Malcolm X’s phrase "If You Don't Stand For Something You'll Fall For Anything” into our daily understanding. Now we sit around using the internet to show off Planking pictures because we want to one up the IGNORANT NEGRO PLANKING ON HIS ROOF just because. My heart cries because when I mentioned this to most, I am called a sell-out or too serious. We have allowed the term, No Snitching to hold more respect than "Black Power", “Unity” "Freedom" in our neighborhoods. When did rappers, entertainers and ball players start holding the ear of the people? Damn where are the radicals?

Our sons can now marry their brothers and our daughters and their sister then ask their male friend for sperm to start families. It’s all business as usual. Why did Black Churches get so quite the day the law was passed. It came and passed and it was Oh hum back to the business of saving souls. Did I miss something? The greatest radical ever seen was Jesus Christ yet the greatest disconnection comes from those who claim the love and follow him? Remember, when folks fought in attempts to prove He had "Skin of Bronze and hair like Wool? Are you kidding me? Hold that contradiction for moment.

As I close I wander how the evil ones in the world got to the mountain top before the rest of us. Did they look over and see King's dream only to slither down and whisper into the ears of the masses climbing, “Kill the Radicals” and all your dreams shall be fulfilled? As a people we have laid down for the count out, instead of continuing to fight and taking our chances.

I lay these flowers on the grave of the one known as the Radical, "May You Rest in Peace you are surly missed"

Biography - K.L. Belvin

K.L. Belvin is a prime example of what happens when you allow God to take control of your life. A father of six, Dean of students for the New York City Department of Education for over

twelve years and a Christian, K. L. is also the co-founder of Bravin Publishing LLC, a literary publishing company geared towards publishing authors who are presenting minorities as role models for today's youth specifically, the African-American communities. In June 2008, K. L. released his first manuscript called "A Man in Transition," a book of poems, stories and personal observations. With the success of the first book K. L. decided it was time to expand his potential.

In February of 2010, K. L. and his wife, Ms. New York Plus America 2010 who also serves as the creative director of their vision, Tiffany Braxton Belvin, created their own boutique publishing company called, Bravin Publishing LLC. In April 2010, Bravin Publishing released their second published book for author, Jovan Roseboro titled, "The Only One That Can Stop Me Is Me." Bravin Publishing released their first Spanish manuscript "Restaurando El Matrimonio Y La Familia" by Rev. Victor M. Zesati in September 2010. The Forgotten Legacy, by Willie E. Copper a historical account of the men and women who fought and were forgotten during the Civil War. released April 2011, Impressions of a Poet, by Empress Poetry, a poetic collection of inspirational poetry. released May 2011

K. L. has completed his second book "From Gigolo to Jesus," released in February 2011 through Bravin Publishing. The book discusses his journey from being a whore to a man of God. He discusses how gaining access to pornography at a young age and having no male role models led him to a life of inward and outward destruction which included being a part of over twenty-five miscarriages and abortions combined, having six children with five different women, being married and cheating, divorced, all while being lead to hearing the Lord's voice, changing his life, getting married to a woman he cheated on three times while they were dating, reconnecting with all his children, even one he found out about twenty six years later, and reconnecting with his father after thirty nine years, whom he had never met. The book focuses on where he was to how he became as a mentor, author, educator and now most importantly, a man of God.

K. L. has published credits in poetry, fictional and non-fictional stories. Over the years K. L. changed his focus of writing from erotic based content to romance, spiritual inspirations and social promotion due to personal religious choices. It is his hope to offer the world-focused insight of a man who has completely changed his life from one of misogyny to helping and supporting others. His writing proves his growth as a man, educator and husband who now, attempts to offer counsel, entertainment and guidance to all he meets. He has been fortunate enough to have performed and/or appeared on various internet radio programs like The Jay Everday Radio Show, Blog talk Radio's Black Butterfly, Urban Literary Review, Black Authors Network, and De'Hitmen Present the Assassins Lounge and as a co-host, performed spoken word at New York's Bowery Poetry Club, as part of the Urban Erotika showcase and various other locations. K. L. posses an A.A.S. in business from Kingsborough Community College; City University of New York, a B.S. in Education from York College; City University of New York and hold a Master's Degree in Education, specializing in Curriculum Writing, Assessments and Teaching from Walden University. K. L. anticipates beginning his Ph.D. studies in the near future and credits his enormous success to God and his wife who also serves as his best friend.

Currently, K.L. is a contributing writer for Everyday the Magazine and Divine Inspirations Magazine. He is also a weekly co-host for Three Ingredients, One Foundation, a radio show that airs every Friday night from 7 PM - 10 PM on Everyday Radio.

Family, Its Time For Some Action.

Family, it’s time for some action.

Here is how we begin to solve the problems in our homes, communities, and schools; Start with self and what you put out to the world in the forms of conversations, panels, blogs or even Face Book posts. Begin holding people accountable for the message they are conveying. Hold your family, friends, neighbors, educators, politicians, and everyone you come in contact with accountable to what they do, write, and say.

Next, pay close attention to the words people use around you, in songs, movies and books. A person's choice of words represents what is truly at the heart of who they are. Learn to decipher words and look past simple meanings. This doesn't require a degree; one will help though, but demand more even in conversation. Again you have to push yourself to get there so it will become easier each day. Learn to listen closely. This means staying quiet more and speaking when you truly have something you want people to hear. The Bible says:

Proverbs 18:21 (New International Version)
21 The tongue has the power of life and death,
and those who love it will eat its fruit.

Begin to believe what you say in this world matters to all who hear it. This is why you have to be careful in what you release and take in.

Next, check what you’re reading and who you’re purchasing it from. They wrote a book, so what! Are they a good person, does their company perform sound and honest business transactions, does their character fall in line with your beliefs, is their message what you have come to accept in your house or around your family? These are demands you can make when you receiving goods and services from others. If you don't like the answers then walk away.
Evaluate what you do for entertainment. Turn the damn TV off and step away from the PC or smart phone if you're not attempting to learn something new for further self-development. (The Smart Phone branding label, alone, shows the foolishness being marketed to us). Surfing the net can and should be fun, but if you spend hours online and all you have learned is who wore what where, who dumped who, and how much money someone else is making that is not going to put a dime in your pocket you have wasted what could have been much more productive time. We have to reacquire how to enjoy human contact. Let’s get back to face-to-face social interaction. Next, re-evaluate and change your circles where necessary. In every Holy and Philosophical book there are references to the people, thoughts, frequencies and energy you surround yourself with. There has to be something to this fact, if so many different individuals can see the dangers of negativity around you. Light and dark can’t occupy the same space as said in the Bible. It’s now time to purge yourself of the folks who would bring poison to your lips by being your friend. Yes, I use metaphors for a reason. It's that serious. Think of maintaining a negative relationship as someone climbing stairs while someone happily adds weight to your back at the same time saying they are trying to help you climb. Do you get the picture?

Finally, guard your time, like you would your life or your family. Money, gold and all the other so called precious objects hold no weight to time. It truly is the most precious commodity a person can have. People have fought to keep from getting older for the fear of death is a rude motivator. However time plays a deeper role in what you do or don't do has a lasting effect on those around you. The power of one person is so overlooked, to such a degree, when we see someone else making incredible moves we secretly root for them which speak to the fears we have within ourselves.

Nothing I have written here is new, but very well needed. We have to find a way to heal and move forward. It is possible if we convince ourselves it is. I am taking the stand and asking anyone to come and join me in moving to a more positive plane of existence. My hand is out, next step is yours.

After having a record breaking winter and an upcoming weekend forecast of seventy degree weather we are finally thawing out here in New York. We look forward to the warmer seasons because that means Bravin Publishing is hitting the road soon with book signings and motivational speaking engagements.

seeks authors for poetry anthology.

We are looking for poets to contribute for consideration in an upcoming anthology to be published by Bravin Publishing. Please submit 3 - 5 poems, each poem has to be unpublished work. Each poem must be no longer than 12 -60 lines. File must be sent via email in Microsoft word without formatting, single spaced, 12 point font. Poems cannot be of an overtly sexual or violent content, contain racist views, nor be derogatory to religious views. Poems will be screened by a Bravin Publishing reviewer.

Poem Submission process:
Author must be able to submit manuscripts in a form acceptable to Bravin Publishing. Manuscripts must be submitted in a single spaced Microsoft word document with a minimum of formatting. Acceptable formatting includes italics, bold and underlines, paragraph indentations, chapter headings and subchapter headings. Special fonts and/or unique design components should not be included with manuscript submission, but sent in a separate document. If Bravin Publishing is unable to open or use documents sent by Author after reasonable effort has been made, Bravin Publishing may either decline the submission.

If selected the author will be given a contract to have their work featured in upcoming poetry anthology. Poets will be given 2 free copies as well as be able to purchase the book at only $2 over the printing cost. This will provide each poet a opportunity to create profit for themselves with each book sold. Poets will be able to purchase unlimited number of titles.

From my book "A Man in Transition" This was written and placed in my book in 2008 to ask questions on where are our next leaders like Dr. King are coming from.

A Simple Tribute to a Great Man, Thank You Dr. King, We're trying,

Where have those leaders gone? Where are the men of conviction? Where are the wives of these great men and where are those families that were born from the union of such great folks??

Where is the next MLK Jr.? Did King's words truly only rate as a good speech and some interesting lessons in history classes? Is he only to be an interesting topic in January and then again in February when we watch the films and say, "Was it really that bad then?" "How could they just stand there and let that happen to themselves!" "Why didn’t they fight back?" "Did non-violence really work?" Did Dr. King die for nothing?

Is this holiday truly that or is it a token of appreciation so we will stop complaining about things? Why did the episode of the Boondocks spark controversy when it was really about how many of us forgot what the man was really about? Did we forget he was a man of god, who died doing what he believed God wanted him to do? Where is the next MLK Jr.? What happened to real marches about real issues? Where did the SNCC, SCLC, and NAACP go? DO people even remember what “JIM CROW” was?

Dr. King paved the way but when did we stopped laying the bricks to the house he built with blood, sweat, tears and his life? When was the last successful boycott after King when home? Something is wrong here, times are supposed to be better. What did he do wrong? Where are the men this great OAK TREE of a man was supposed to Father? King gave his life for what he believed, who picked up his FLAME and added their on lighter fluid? How could we have gone backwards, from Emmit Till to Sean Bell something is wrong, things were supposed to be better? King saw and understood what the future was supposed to be by looking deep into his present and things still didn't change.

When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the "unalienable Rights" of "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note, insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. And so, we've come to cash this check, a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice."

Yet nothing has changed and that check was never re-written. Where did we go wrong?? Where is the next MLK Jr.? We are farther divided now then we ever were, economically, educationally, socially and of course spiritually. We are not even close to helping each other over the hump, hell we have moved back to the back of the bus without being told to do so. How did this happen? Wasn't his death supposed to spark a national uprising that spirited us in the very future he was fighting for, took all those beatings for, and spent time in jail for? I thought when you’re a Martyr for your cause people stand up and take notice of your life being taken and become motivated? Where did he fail here?

Did we forget that period between 1963 and 1972 when we watched and allowed America to wild out and kill X, EVERS, The Kennedy Brothers, as well as King? Toss in the infiltration and destruction of all the BLACK Panthers for fun and this is how our movement died? Where did we fail?

Well they gave him a holiday and we get the day off, but through all the TV shows, plays, skits and songs where will the next KING emerge from? The next who, the next KING? One benefit to all this is his queen has left to take her place next to the man she loved so if for nothing else I am happy that the KINGS are reunited. On this day I am going to sit for a few and ponder the very questions I have put to all that have read this. I really don't have the answers.

As an educator I have tricked myself into believing that I will have some small role in the making of the next one (KING), and with the Lord's mercy he'll allow me to see one (KING) grow in the next MLK Jr. I can only dream and pray it doesn't end like the Man who’s holiday most won't celebrate in a fashion fitting to the man that died for it become on.

Dr. King, I have never met you, nor seen you but your presence is felt when I read your words or watch your videos. The Lord truly touched you and I hope that I can do a tenth of all that you've done to make this a better world to live in. God bless you Dr. King, your wife and your family. I am one of those children who listened to you as I grew into a man and prays someday my children and many other children;

I felt the need to re-post this because it struck a cord in me in where do we see ourselves in the paths we set out to travel.
My literary journey has been interesting to say the least. I know the Lord has plenty more surprises for me. Here are my answers to the question. Please consider your own response and post them here or on your page.

Are you where you anticipated you'd be in your literary career at this point? What are some high points? Disappointments?

Actually I am further a long than my original dreams had allowed me to venture, which tells me I kept a chain around my thoughts and dreams like a dog one tries to keep close to home. However God has pushed me forward because other than being an author, I never saw myself assisting other authors to become self published or speaking at the venues I do.
I have come to meet some tremendous talents in the field of writing, to whom money is only a tool used to get them further along the path they choose. Who offer assistance without a invoice. Plus, I have to tip my cap, to the people from many different faiths who have been open enough to share with me because I share my own beliefs with the world. I have learned so much about my own faith listening and learning from others outside my spiritual walk.

My disappointments;
not listening to others who spoke of personal mistakes and problems in this industry. Not truly learning as much as I could about the business, along with some of the people in it before heading out to sell my wares. I ended up in places where the only one making money was the event promoters while the authors traded books. Equally as disappointing has been the "Hollywood" type behavior from authors of color who seem to act as if they have the game on lock but when you pick up the national papers our names still are not in the New York Times and many other mainstream media yet "We Fancy Huh?"
Viewing such behavior has caused me to shrink down my circles and learn by watching and speaking with a select few of authors and publishers who truly care about assisting others who are coming up behind them, passing them, or who happen to be in front at the moment.
Finally, the last disappointment for me is how poorly genres outside Urban Literature and Urban Erotica are excepted from a culture of people who use to dominate many different art forms. Why do those who don't look like us understand the power of the different genres and even support with purchases and kind words, but our own people seem to have tunnel vision? It saddens me when readers of color will fight harder in debate or flat out refusal to read faith based, educational based, true romantic (non sexual) based or a deep poetic based works, but will support brothers or sisters selling sex or violence blindly? Lord forgive us all.

For once in my life- The Temptations

There aren't many songs you can see a singer sing and feel the joy and pain. Paul William was a victim of his own drinking. His performance here allows you to see the demon he was dealing with. I was so moved to see this performance. His type of talent and passion is missed.

From Gigolo to Jesus.

My new book "From Gigolo To Jesus" has morphed into something else. When I started recording my words. Oh I am sorry, I don't like to type so putting on some headphones allows me to get my thoughts out quicker than sitting at a computer with limited typing skills. This way I can get the maximum thought out to you the reader. With this book it started to take on a different feel. With each chapter I was re-living so much of the dirt which was my life I was growing depressed. I even stopped recording at one time and that cause a delay it the production. You see, I am trying to be transparent about who I was so people can see the beauty in who I am now. I am attempting to offer hope to those that don't feel there is any for someone like themselves. Its tough to do. Standing under the weight of your own past is difficult at best. It brings back to the surface pain you haven't felt in a long time.
This is where this video touches me. When I was at my worse in how I was living I was torn between what was right and what I wanted. I was addicted to wanting sex, not sex itself but the idea of monogamy and misogyny. Here I had a wonderful woman at home and I out chasing anything in a skirt. I was laying with women I had no business being next too. To come home and be scared to lay next to your lady or to even think about touching her the same night eats at your soul. I didn't sleep and spent hour after hour staring at a computer screen which didn't help. The computer only mainlined the drug of attention right back into my system. The minute you think you quieted the voices here comes another email, text message, instant message and you laying back enjoying the high internet pimping with the next sexual victim. This song speaks to my feelings because when you look at Paul Williams face you see the pain but you can hear his talent. He was going to sing this song with all he had to get out what he felt. Anyone who is fighting with any internal demons needs that type of release or you feel your going to die.
Like Paul Williams demons I had my own. His was the bottle and mine was women. When I read and like many of us who watched the Temptations movie, was touched by how Paul fell from grace, only to take his own life. I so understand because I didn't care if I died or not. A few times even thought of really doing it but like a Bitch I folded up and got scared to die. A man was designed to be a hunter so there is a level of toughness which comes with the masculine genes however, when addiction, ambition, greed, denial take their place it serves to carve away that hunters edge so we look for coping agents. Paul's pain in his singing is a internal look at what his coping agent was doing to him.
There is one thing I want you to look for and listen too with this video. Please pay attention towards the end his pain is clear but he sings as if he is signing directly to his wife. From time frame 2:35 on to the end, his face shows it when he says "Lord knows I need her!!" Too often men will indirectly put out to the world who they need to save them or what they need to save them. If nothing is done many slip into the abyss of despair. I was at the brink and thank God for allowing me to hear his voice and then leading me back to Tiffany to save my life. If not, I would have been as dead as Brother Paul, haven taken my own life by the way I was living.

The Ten Point Plan of the Black Panther Party for Defense.

1. WE WANT FREEDOM. WE WANT POWER TO DETERMINE THE DESTINY OF OUR BLACK AND OPPRESSED COMMUNITIES.
We believe that Black and oppressed people will not be free until we are able to determine our destinies in our own communities ourselves, by fully controlling all the institutions which exist in our communities.

2. WE WANT FULL EMPLOYMENT FOR OUR PEOPLE.
We believe that the federal government is responsible and obligated to give every person employment or a guaranteed income. We believe that if the American businessmen will not give full employment, then the technology and means of production should be taken from the businessmen and placed in the community so that the people of the community can organize and employ all of its people and give a high standard of living.

3. WE WANT AN END TO THE ROBBERY BY THE CAPITALISTS OF OUR BLACK AND OPPRESSED COMMUNITIES.
We believe that this racist government has robbed us and now we are demanding the overdue debt of forty acres and two mules. Forty acres and two mules were promised 100 years ago as restitution for slave labor and mass murder of Black people. We will accept the payment in currency which will be distributed to our many communities. The American racist has taken part in the slaughter of our fifty million Black people. Therefore, we feel this is a modest demand that we make.

4. WE WANT DECENT HOUSING, FIT FOR THE SHELTER OF HUMAN BEINGS.
We believe that if the landlords will not give decent housing to our Black and oppressed communities, then housing and the land should be made into cooperatives so that the people in our communities, with government aid, can build and make decent housing for the people.

5. WE WANT DECENT EDUCATION FOR OUR PEOPLE THAT EXPOSES THE TRUE NATURE OF THIS DECADENT AMERICAN SOCIETY. WE WANT EDUCATION THAT TEACHES US OUR TRUE HISTORY AND OUR ROLE IN THE PRESENT-DAY SOCIETY.
We believe in an educational system that will give to our people a knowledge of the self. If you do not have knowledge of yourself and your position in the society and in the world, then you will have little chance to know anything else.

6. WE WANT COMPLETELY FREE HEALTH CARE FOR All BLACK AND OPPRESSED PEOPLE.
We believe that the government must provide, free of charge, for the people, health facilities which will not only treat our illnesses, most of which have come about as a result of our oppression, but which will also develop preventive medical programs to guarantee our future survival. We believe that mass health education and research programs must be developed to give all Black and oppressed people access to advanced scientific and medical information, so we may provide our selves with proper medical attention and care.

7. WE WANT AN IMMEDIATE END TO POLICE BRUTALITY AND MURDER OF BLACK PEOPLE, OTHER PEOPLE OF COLOR, All OPPRESSED PEOPLE INSIDE THE UNITED STATES.
We believe that the racist and fascist government of the United States uses its domestic enforcement agencies to carry out its program of oppression against black people, other people of color and poor people inside the united States. We believe it is our right, therefore, to defend ourselves against such armed forces and that all Black and oppressed people should be armed for self defense of our homes and communities against these fascist police forces.

8. WE WANT AN IMMEDIATE END TO ALL WARS OF AGGRESSION.
We believe that the various conflicts which exist around the world stem directly from the aggressive desire of the United States ruling circle and government to force its domination upon the oppressed people of the world. We believe that if the United States government or its lackeys do not cease these aggressive wars it is the right of the people to defend themselves by any means necessary against their aggressors.

9. WE WANT FREEDOM FOR ALL BLACK AND OPPRESSED PEOPLE NOW HELD IN U. S. FEDERAL, STATE, COUNTY, CITY AND MILITARY PRISONS AND JAILS. WE WANT TRIALS BY A JURY OF PEERS FOR All PERSONS CHARGED WITH SO-CALLED CRIMES UNDER THE LAWS OF THIS COUNTRY.
We believe that the many Black and poor oppressed people now held in United States prisons and jails have not received fair and impartial trials under a racist and fascist judicial system and should be free from incarceration. We believe in the ultimate elimination of all wretched, inhuman penal institutions, because the masses of men and women imprisoned inside the United States or by the United States military are the victims of oppressive conditions which are the real cause of their imprisonment. We believe that when persons are brought to trial they must be guaranteed, by the United States, juries of their peers, attorneys of their choice and freedom from imprisonment while awaiting trial.

10. WE WANT LAND, BREAD, HOUSING, EDUCATION, CLOTHING, JUSTICE, PEACE AND PEOPLE'S COMMUNITY CONTROL OF MODERN TECHNOLOGY.
When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume, among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

As I stand facing what is the future of being a new me I am silenced by the thoughts of personal reflection.
This past yeas has been a roller coaster ride and like for many the apprehension, thrill and completions are part of this deep personal connection
Each month brought a moment of doubt, happiness, remorse and love
Day after day faded into another, yet as humans we still search for answers from above.
As I am positioned to step into a New Year I am faced with the similar choices from a different point of view.
To considering what changes to make and what areas to strengthen while not changing completely the you that many knew.
A man can lose his mind working on being something to so many but he has to live up the vision he sets for himself.
Toss in responsibilities, work, children and a significant other or lack there of and these moments start to seem overwhelming to oneself.
There are those who will not be able to share in the New Year for their time was called and days ended.
A part of them will be carried as we move in the void of unknowing asking for answers they can no longer lend.
As new people come into our lives, old people are cleaved away
Growth and peace has to be the reason to push and strive for the price paid.
With each bottle popped and cheer into the heavens there must be a quiet time.
For this New Year can’t be taken lightly for it is a start to of profitable increase or a harsh decline.
The world unifies on this very night, proving if we want there are reasons to come together.
Yet in less then 24 hours it will be as if many never even bothered.
New Year is not as easy as many would make it seem, for the focused knows there is much to do.
To all who are dealing with the apprehension at end of the year and onset of the one to follow I stand with you.
I pray we can learn more about each other and move closer as friends.
Since the future is bright for all of as we prepare for the entrance of 2010.

When I do interviews I refer to myself as a Traditional poet. Too often many may not understand why I make such a designation. Its because, when I read a piece I am not theatrical or overly animated with my words. However, I like to see it in others when they are performing their craft.
I look at my work as serving dinner. I try to give in courses, so you have time to enjoy what was given and what is to come. Not placing it all in front of you for you to sample what you please. However there are times the buffet is need for those who choose to sample. I enjoy reading the words to create a, moment, a thought, an idea so there is a connection. When I read its just the words no twisting medaphor or smooth blends. A simply steak trying to be that "a steak" But you see this is me, but there are times when the steaks needs dressing or a different look. It is still steak but in another form or design. This is why all is need to fit the choice of the person who orders the meal. I love all who write and make attempts to reach others with the words inside them.
There is no set definition to any one person but this is where the meter lies with me..

I wanted to share this.. I see so much shadiness going on amongst Poets and Spoken Word Artists when there shouldn't be. Our circles need more unity and understanding to truly be accepted more than we are at the moment. We all serve a role in getting our words to the masses. I think if more brothers and sisters took the time to truly understand what the gifts they are with, their work would be readily accepted by all. There would be greater success with all who attempt this craft.. The success I am speaking of doesn't mean in terms of finances but in terms of peace of mind with your words and what they represent..

The so called industry will have its wants and norms but if we are true to our craft we will be more than rich we will be blessed.
Just my thoughts.. Poets, Spoken Word Artist, Slam Artist, Wordsmiths, whatever the designation is it all has a place and we have to be true to what we create...

Traditional Poetry

Traditionalists generally believe that poems give enduring and universal life to what was merely transitory and particular. Through them, the poet expresses his vision, real or imaginative, and he does so in forms that are intelligible and pleasurable to others, and likely to arouse emotions akin to his own. Poetry is language organized for aesthetic purposes. Whatever else it does, poetry must bear witness, must fulfill the cry: 'let not my heart forget what mine eyes have seen.' A poem is distinguished by the feeling that dictates it and that which it communicates, by the economy and resonance of its language, and by the imaginative power that integrates, intensifies and enhances experience. Poems bear some relationship to real life but are equally autonomous and independent entities that contain within themselves the reason why they are so and not otherwise. Unlike discourse, which proceeds by logical steps, poetry is intuited whole as a presentiment of thought and/or feeling. Workaday prose is an abbreviation of reality: poetry is its intensification. Poems have a transcendental quality: there is a sudden transformation through which words assume a particular importance. Like a bar of music, or a small element in a holographic image, a phrase in a poem has the power to immediately call up whole ranges of possibilities and expectations. Art is a way of knowing, and is valuable in proportion to the justice with which it evaluates that knowledge. Poetry is an embodiment of human values, not a kind of syntax. True symbolism in poetry allows the particular to represent the more general, not as a dream or shadow, but as the momentary, living revelation of the inscrutable.

The poet's task is to resurrect the outer, transient and perishable world within himself, to transform it into something much more real. He must recognize pattern wherever he sees it, and build his perceptions into poetic form that has the coherence and urgency to persuade us of its truth: the intellectual has to be fused with the sensuous meaning. All poets borrow, but where good poets improve on their borrowing, the bad debase. The greatness of the poet is measurable by the real significance of the resemblances on which he builds, the depth of the roots in the constitution, if not of the physical world, then of the moral and emotional nature of man.

Poetry can be verse or prose. Verse has a strong metrical element. An inner music is the soul of poetry. Poetry withers and dries out when it leaves music, or at least some imagined music, too far behind. The diction of poetry is a fiction, neither that of the speaker nor the audience. Without its contrivance poetry is still possible, but is immensely poorer. Subtly the vocabulary of poetry changes with the period, but words too familiar or too remote defeat purpose of the poet.

5 Minutes, 5 Questions With… K.L. Belvin, author of A Man in Transition

A Man in Transition is a book of poems that reflect where my mind and soul were during a different time in my life compared to where it is now. With my life changing for the better, it was time to show the world what the inside of man looks like when he looks to become a better person. Some poems are relatively new and I wrote some poems a while ago. The book is divided by chapters that offer a glimpse in particular categories: Spiritual, Romance, Being A Parent, Life as an Educator, Worldly observations and finally a look at my sexually-charged past.

Some may question the inclusion of erotic poems. For there to be a true transformation, there has to be a starting point and end point. This book offers that but in reverse. The erotic poems reflect my past. Being a book of poems and stories, the feel of the book is one of redemption, expression of feelings and life questions.

Everyone who reads A Man in Transition can take a moment to see themselves in it. This book was written not only for entertainment, but for counsel, conviction and concern. These are many of the same qualities people come to the bible for. I’m not saying that A Man in Transition should stand up to the bible. Since the belief of the Lord is at the heart of what I write, you’ll see the commonalities.

Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the idea and inspiration to write A Man in Transition?

K.L. Belvin: After giving my life to the Lord and becoming a born again Christian, my wife and I sat down and talked about me becoming a writer. We figured the world would like my story ideas and poetry. Since I had so many poems and had been working on a compilation of all my erotic poems and stories, my wife and I decided to change my flow of writing to one that shows my transition. Hence the name of this book. Another influence on creating my book was the students I teach. They constantly reminded me I talk to them about being anything they choose. Well, they turned the tables and asked me why I hadn’t published my work.

With these two factors, I believed it was time to show the world my talents and tell my story. There is one other factor to add to my motivation to put my work out; it was the author Mary B. Morrison. Ms. Morrison is an Essence and New York Times best seller of Erotic and Romantic fiction. She heard me on a blog talk radio show discussing the story of how my wife, then my girl friend, overcame my whorish behavior and getting caught cheating three times to becoming Born Again and loving my wife with my life. She asked me to write my story which she placed in her novel that was published in July 2008 entitled “Who’s Loving You”. My words are there on page 246. I was blown away and touched with the idea that someone who writes for a living wanted my story in her book. It was truly an honor, and it sent a message I have a future in this business. This moved me to get my book published.

JP: Why did you choose poetry as a means to communicate your life’s journey?

KL: I chose poetry because I wanted to dip my toe in the pool of being a writer. Since I had so many poems saved and had small success in doing erotic poems online and on stage, I thought poetry would give me an idea of whether I could be accepted and taken seriously as a writer.

Since writing is my weakest area of my personal and professional self, I knew I was going to have to lean on the Lord and learn as I go along. I began writing more and more and started to shape my poetry to fit the changes I made in my life. The book began to take shape as my learning grew greater and greater.

I wasn’t sure if poetry would be acceptable. Each book I read said it wasn’t a great idea to consider poetry, and I grew more motivated. I put a few poems in various places online and the response was positive so my motivation grew steadily.

I truly believe my poetry book is not a usual one since it tells my story and reads differently. I feel the Lord has touched my pen when putting this book together. It has been successful enough to open up other literary doors that would normally be closed to a writer with a limited background.

JP: Who are the poets that shaped your style? What were you able to take from them that made your poetry stronger?

KL: At first there were no poets who I would say I patterned myself after or who affected how I read my work. I enjoyed some of the well known poets like Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, the Last Poets, Amari Baraka and Sonia Sanchez, but I didn’t read them exclusively. I had one or two pieces I might have liked from them and many others. However, I simply wrote what was on my heart in a way I thought made sense to me. I figured since I wasn’t the biggest poetry fan, if I can write in a clear manner and with feeling people would respond.

I have a formula I keep to and I am not even sure if it’s a particular style to begin with. I simply write with 2, 3 or 4 lines then a break. I don’t always rhyme. I am not classically trained it’s done much by feel. Nowadays, I have learned to listen to poets and read more from so many different poets and spoken word artist. I try to work on a slow rhythmic style with my words clearly heard. I don’t play with words in a slick slam style but more, as I like to say, “A Quiet Storm” style. I feel like my work is easy listening and filled with emotion. Since I pull my words from the emotional situations I feel or see each day, it is there I place my poetic flag.

Each time I watch or hear someone perform, I grow stronger in understanding how words can sound or be used. This has allowed me to grow steadily each time I perform. I am working on memorizing more of my work. If there has been a person that has a direct effect on my current poetic growth has been Brother Marc Lacy. I met him online and performed in a contest with him. When I met him in Tampa last June at the Black Writers Conference and Reunion, he was a humbled and focused brother. He was giving of himself and sat and took time to talk to a fellow poet. He seemed as if he could help me grow he would benefit. To be new and not have my book out for another week, Marc was right on point with his advice. I also had a chance to watch him sell his product.

Another brother I met in Tampa was Vincent Alexandria. We sat and shared stories with each other for what seemed like a few hours. He then took out his poetry book signed it and said ‘This is for you brother. You are on your way as a writer.” WOW! We then were asked to host the poetry seminar, and here I am sitting and reading my work in front of literary professionals, writers and the like, listening to Vincent and I discuss creating poetry books. These two men let a definite mark on my growth as poet. I left Tampa knowing I could sell my words to others.

JP: What advice would you give to poet who want to publish their works?

KL: I would say this: fellow poets, understand this is not the golden ticket to wheel barrels of money. If you decide to go this route, understand the difficult road ahead and face it with open heart, mind and eyes. Don’t get discouraged easy. Take as many opportunities you can to get your work heard. Write as much as you can, and be able to clearly explain your motivation for each piece. Respect other poets, and share time with them. Listen to them to hear how some words can be crafted. Get professional material to learn the literary business. Understand many are not going to support poetry because it’s saturated with so many who write.

Finally, have faith in God. Pray often, and let your soul deliver messages through that inner voice we all have. Believe in your abilities to shape words. Remember fear is only an emotion not an action, so even when scared, do something positive.

JP: What’s next for K. L. Belvin?

KL: I contributed to the anthology The Soul of a Man. I am happy to see my attempt at Christian fiction was accepted. The book was released the 21st of June. This manuscript has 13 brothers and me writing about men’s triumphs over difficult situations through their belief in the Lord. It’s going to be a blast. I am also finishing up another Christian fiction story for another anthology coming out in November. It’s called Bended Knee. It’s going to be a very interesting read since there is only eight of us contributing to the manuscript. Again, I was happy to have my words accepted.

Each of these opportunities serves as motivation. After both of them, I am going to take some time to try to learn more about writing. I have my second book I want to work on its title is From Gigolo to Jesus. It’s my story which speaks on how a man goes from being a misogynist to a man of God. There is much I think mothers and young men need to know about change, and I pray to be the example for them.

I want to write with an understanding of what goes into quality non-fiction. I also have another poetry book I want collaborate on with other poets which will promote the romance of married folks. Just because you’re married you’re not dead. The poems with show what goes on in romantic marriages.

My father and I didn't know each other until I was 39 years old. We reconnected after all that time due to me searching for him. He was a young man who didn't know what being a father was supposed to be. He created many lives he couldn't take care of. Well, it turned out I was the same way. In finding my faith and learning to forgive, I searched him out and we finally met. I listened and learned his story to find out that he was worried if I had been told the truth about him. He also had changed his ways and found his faith. Here we were trying to be better men to our families not knowing we were praying to the same God and wanting to see each other because of what our faith taught us. He should be in the Hall of Fame because he was able to humble himself and meet me after 39 years and say he was sorry and that he was ready to be my friend if I would allow him. We have been friends ever since. It was truly an honor to see my father had changed as I had. Our families are healing because of our reconnection. We have begun to break the chains that bind many families of color. In the picture you'll see both my father and my brother meeting our father for the first time. Two weeks later he honored my request and came to my wedding. It was a great gift.

Using negatives for Self Reflection

Hey guys I know I don't blog as much as many others. I have been in the midst of getting my writing seen and heard as well as getting my publishing business off the ground. I am trying to get all of this done while looking for a new teaching position at a new school.

This year has been a difficult one. My year is not the same as others. As a teacher, I look at my year from Sept - June, then the June- Aug..

Now let me get to the reason behind this post. I have been looking into different schools and I have gone on a few different interviews. Yesterday was no different except this one ended with a very negative event happening amidst the interview. With a NYC Department of Education interview you are required to meet a schools hiring committee. This committee is made up of the principal, and at least three other staff members. Each school chooses their group differently.

Well, after answering all the question in ultra professional manner and feeling the interview was going well the principal asked a question which I felt was rude, insensitive and simply disrespectful. Even though I understood his reasoning for wanting an answer I didn't feel it needed to be asked and definitely not at that moment.

The principal asked "Mr. Belvin I want to ask this; You see we are on the fourth floor of the building and the cafeteria is in the basement, five floors down. Would you have any problems being able to get from here to there to handle a problem, if there was one?" Now on surface it doesn't seem like a negative question, but I am a man of size. I also have been teaching for over ten years without ever a question of doing my duties. Elevators are not a part of many buildings in the Dept of Ed. so I wasn't sure why he went there. I politely responded, I don't understand the question. My hope was for clarity and to see if he was leaning towards my size in his inquiry. After listening to him stumble over his words, while turning red I knew he felt embarrassed. One of his colleagues attempted to add levity to the room since my silence and the principal clear uncomfortableness was evidence of a problem. I smiled and took the principal off the hook. I said, no sir I don't see the steps being a problem. It would actually save me money not having to pay for a trainer. Also I possess no limitations that prevent me from doing the duties required. I explained in my current school, the gym is on the first floor and the school is on third floor. I make the walk a few times a day in my current school so it wouldn't be a problem here. Now I allowed the interview to end but I have to say it made me think as I walked down the stairs to leave.

My focus from this was this is an extension of the fight I current embattled with. The fight of changing my mental and physical self in relation to weight. People are fighting to get in shape around the world so its not a battle I share alone. Yet the heart of it is a solidarity battle. The man in the gym in California, Israel or wherever doesn't effect my rate of weight loss. Yet we stare up at the same mountain. Its tricky if you don't reflect deeply at where you are.

The principals question was his way of making sure he doesn't make a mistake for his school and children. He just didn't consider what effect it has on the person hearing it. Bias is a strange entity being that many that practice it are subtle and in many cases think they are not acting from a malice point of view.

Yet I say this to my students often "A punch in the face hurts weather it was intentional or unintentional" Now we know one cause a different dilemma from the other yet the pain is still there. People need to understand that. If the principal pays me the respect of waiting until we are alone to say "I am considering hiring you but I want to ask you this, if your hired will the stairs be a problem because many have complained about us not having a elevator." This way he takes the spotlight off me and places it on the situation. I still don't know how he felt comfortable asking the question with me being a man of size. I simply add to the pile of things which matter slightly and look for the positive in the happening.

Well guys I am not going to attack the board or the principal. I will write letting them know to remove me from consideration for the position. I will also mention the awkward question in hope someone else is not offended. Then I'll pray for all involved. Prayer is one my main tools t deal with a situation. I have seen it work and payoff.

Let it Go!
(Ode to an Ex)

To hold a negative feeling hostage is the worst type of sickness. It’s been to long doesn’t time heal all wounds? But what happens when the person doesn’t know their sick?

You pass this disease on to all who come in contact with you. Yet you blame others. You’re dying slowly and here you believe you’re happy.

Your children can sense it. They dare not speak on it. Their silence is secured by the uneasiness of your behavior.

How long will you hold this gun to the head of anyone you deem unworthy? With each insult and quip your souls hardens. You are hallow.

You are quick to point out the flaws of others. However, you remain perfect in every way subliminally. Love has a very different meaning to you.

Those close to you hold to the hope change will come. But that’s a song and you can’t hear the music. You simply feel the world will pay for what it’s done to you.

I pray for you because I remember when you were without this pain. Back then, I was the caused of it. Today, I don’t understand why you cling to it like rope to a drowning man.

One day you’ll awaken from your spiritual hibernation and see these days long past. Age and lost youth will be your prize for time wasted. You will know what many a bitter person has learned.

Every step of this walk called life we will face these moments. You are not alone in what has happened in your trek of living. However, the price paid will be great when all you had to do from the start was Let it Go!!

Why I Love Black Women

There are questions that seem easy to answer and when you sit and reflect on how to answer you find it’s not as easy to answer. In my case it’s the complexity of black women which causes the racing of my thoughts. So what I am going to do is give you an open look at why I love the black women in my life, over the years and in black women in general.

First and foremost, I love my wife. She is a strong, sexy, secure, and thick sister. She has shown herself to be a gift to me. The Lord must have sent her for me because of how we fit each other’s lives. Looking at her you just don’t see a wife, you see an African American role model. As a black woman she doesn’t allow the world to order her steps. My mother and grandmother represent a different time of black women. They come from an era where it’s been the belief that sisters should just be seen and take care of the home. Not these two black women they are far from ordinary. If there is anything traditional about them it would be they are of the fuller figured body shape. In their day a woman wasn’t judge by the size of her body, but the way she helped her family and supported her man. However there was another set, a group of sisters who had to raise their children alone. Who made their mistakes with certain choices of men, yet they refused to allow their families to suffer from it. As black women they represent that southern mother and grandmother. Smart enough to know what is right or wrong. They may not have finished college, but they were doctor, psychologist, coach, referee and chef all in the same household.

Throughout the years I have found my choice of black women reflect the women who lived in the areas I grew up. To be direct, I had a thing for Ghetto girls. If that term can hold any merit one would need to understand the mentality of a black woman from an urban area. These sisters are the product of pain, joy, happiness and sorrow. They have loved and lost. They have hurt and been hurt. They have children not always in the setting that most of America would say was proper. Yet these black women have nursed into existence some of the most intriguing children the world has ever seen. You see these sisters are not all the stay home, baby machines many would make them out to be. Many are homemakers, personal bankers and handymen without the guidance of role model. I am not trying to generalize these sisters. They are entirely too complex for any one person to attempt to do so. I simply am speaking on just one facet of black women in this country. As I grew academically so did my contact with other black women. I started to travel this country and see the variety of sisters we have here in the US. Once I went to other countries of color to see black women there, I was touched for ever. Black women are simply phenomenal.

That leads me to this close. Black women to me simply have an edge on their counter parts. I am not downgrading other races and cultures of sisters. However, I am elevating the Black Sister. Black women just walk a little sexier then others. She wears a dress just a little better. She can even make an extra couple of pounds so attractive you’ll hop out your car or off a bus to get her name. She can work a hairstyle like no other on this planet and yet keep you guessing. Yes given a room full of lovely ladies from all over, I am going with the Black woman. It’s not a knock just choice. I pray that sisters' understand their value and worth and continue to hold it down because there are brothers, who need you, want you, adore you, and of course Love you...

I have spent many a day in school listening to the pain our children have at the hands of Fathers who don't seem to understand the power of their absence. No greater time than the holidays when those actions hit home. This is a piece that speaks to the Promises not kept.. It might sting a little and fathers if your one that is mention in the poem today is never a bad day to start to reconnect with your children.

Promises
It was this time of the year when you said, don't worry baby I'll be there.
I stood staring out the stained window waiting.
How could you not come and keep your word?
Like the other times you continue to kill my dreams.

Mom tries to comfort the pain but it runs deep.
She was a victim of the same poison you’re feeding me.
Here I am waiting on a Santa who apparently doesn't like children.
As each car passes I feel a little less human.

What did I do? I didn’t ask to be here.
You spoke those words so strong, so clear, I fell for it again.
Each year, I grow only to feel the same pain differently.
Why do you continue to steal my joy from me, my love for you is real?

The words "I have a gift for you or you know I love you" has the taste of a curse.
Yet I continue to hope and pray the Lord has pity on me.
On days like today I should be out and in creation enjoying this holiday season.
But all I do is fight off hate and your lies disguised as Promises.

Its funny how our lives twist and turn. How we become something different with each postive and negative bounce to our lives. The tools we use at one time of our lives become something so different at a later time. Let me explain what I am talking about.

I am not new to blogging. This was one of the main pimp tools I used when trying to sneak and get my whoring on. The net is great place for folks who have deviant sexual desires. You can work it all out online so all that's left is to meet and seal the sexual deal. Hence the blog was one of the main means of making that happen. Its going on everyday all day. Consider what is to be gained being able to express fictitious feelings and strong sexual urges through poem or short story. Imagining the looks and reactions of someone as each word brings them close to some type of sick extacy over a person they don't know a damn thing about. Such is life here on the net. Such was mine some time ago in not to distant past.

Now the change. I have grown up since that man took these keys and typed out messages to the freaky masses. I have grown into a man that can be respected and wants to be respected when placing my words out to the world. Becoming a professional writer has changed me because I didn't completely understand the power of words in action. I knew words were powerful tools. I had shaped my "PIMP GAME" around them in the streets. I made sure my intelligence was laced through the slick typing and talking I laid down. Now, I understand the other side. The side where people need help and your words might bring them comfort. I see how something you write cuts into someone soul and eases their fears or holds them up when they are weak. The power to grab a person's attention so much they react overwhelmed when they meet you.

Maturity brings understanding that could not be there with inexperience. I can't say youth because I have seen and spoken to some younger folks who's maturity level is through the roof. I am referring to the maturity that comes as you write knowing someone is waiting on you, waiting on your thoughts. That type of power is such you have to be careful you don't let it go to your head and corrupt you absolutely as the old term goes.

I am not on the level, yet, of the so called great writers of our time. You can fill in the blanks on who you think. What I do feel and know about myself is my mind is on their level. My commitment, dedication and body of work is at a infantile place compare to many before me. However my thoughts are there with the best. My mind is as powerful as any writer you can think off because I know I have story after story and poem after poem floating around in my grey matter. My imagination can create whole universe if I were to place in on paper. I just am not sure if I want to make my living writing about what's going on in my head. ""SMILE""
I love talking about what is going on in there, but writing is something I am still undecided on.

Well, its great to be back to blogging so buckle up. I have no clue what I am going to write about. You'll see some love bases articles, some God based entries and everything in between. At the moment I am a self published author and no one can change that. I have a feeling you are going to see and hear more from me as I attempt to make a difference on this planet. Enjoy the ride.
